‘Bosphorus Churros’ brings the touch of España in Calcutta!

Ever imagined that you are sitting in a movie theatre in Kolkata and munching on Spanish snacks while Shah Rukh Khan has gone for a short chai break in between his promotion of Switzerland tourism? 🙂 Well, today we have learnt to imagine many a thing which seemed farfetched even a decade or two ago. Today in Kolkata, if you talk about food items, you get almost everything (barring a few) from across the globe. Maybe one such thing was not present in the gastronomical scenes of the city even a few months ago, but now it is very much there and it’s going to spread all across the city in no time. I am talking about churros, which is a Spanish snack item! We are thankful to Bosphorus Churros for introducing this exclusive outlet in the city of joy.

In fact, Bosphorus Churros is the first to open a churros outlet in Eastern India. A few days ago, I was at their first outlet in the city, which has been opened up in the RDB Cinemas in the RDB Boulevard building (Saltlake Sector-V) and was floored after checking out all those varieties and the impeccable flavors. More outlets of Bosphorus Churros will soon open up in the city and you might be lucky enough to get an outlet in your vicinity as well.

But before moving ahead, let me tell you a word or two about churros, since it is a pretty new thing in Kolkata. Going by the definition that you will find over the internet, ‘Churros is a fried-dough pastry—predominantly choux—based snack. Churros are traditional in Spain and Portugal – from where they originate – as well as the Philippines and Ibero-America. They are also consumed in the Southwestern United States, France and other areas that have received immigration from Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries. In Spain, churros can either be thin (and sometimes knotted) or long and thick, where they are known as porras in some regions. They are normally eaten for breakfast dipped in champurrado, hot chocolate, dulce de leche or café con leche. Sugar is often sprinkled on top.’

Savoury Churros – Imli (tamarind) Chutney Churros

Here, in Kolkata, at this Bosphorus Churros outlet, you will find tad long and thick churros, you won’t get any knotted or spiral churros here, as of now. The basic churros with sugar dust sprinkled over it at this outlet tasted amazing. And believe me, next time I go there, maybe to watch a movie at RDB Cinemas, I will surely have that simple freshly fried, warm churros with sugar sprinkled on top and having a Nutella filling! It’s pure bliss! Apart from the basic churros, you get many more varieties that have various toppings, sauces and fillings inside. Besides sweet churros items, you get various savoury churros as well, which I will cover in a while.

You can also assemble your churros at this outlet; I guess that’s the best part. You can take fried churros with cinnamon and sugar coating and ask for any filling – like Nutella, Chocolate, Strawberry, Salted Caramel, etc. Then go for any variety of the dip – like white chocolate, mix berries, mango, Nutella, strawberry, etc. And finally, add the topping to it – like Oreo, Choco Chips, KitKat, etc. Also, you can add nuts on top like Hazelnuts, mixed nuts, chocolate almonds, etc. Every element discussed above comes with a price tag, so your ultimate assembled product gets a cumulative price adding up that of all the ingredients added.

Bosphorus Churros outlet, at RDB Cinemas

Coming to this outlet, it is present inside the RDB Cinemas, just outside the movie screens/theatres. So it’s not like a roadside stall or kiosk where you can walk in and buy your food. When you are going to watch a movie at RDB Cinemas, you can have it. If you are not going to a movie, then you can order from this outlet through Zomato or Swiggy. More outlets of Bosphorus Churros will be opened soon in the city where you can even dine in. At this RDB Cinemas outlet, you can’t sit and eat, it is a takeaway joint. The outlet looks very neat, well lit, classy and easily noticeable with a huge name board.

Hari (Green) chutney churros!

Now, let me quickly run you through the items which I had tried at this place. And yes, most of them were just yummy!

I started off with the Original Churros, as already mentioned above; it has simple sugar dust coating and a rich Nutella filling. Tastes just heavenly! Next, I went on to the savoury Churros. They are the Indian Churros flavors like Hari Chutney Churros, Tomato Churros and the Imli Chutney Churros. I absolutely loved the Imli chutney churros out of these. The tamarind paste was smeared over the freshly fried churros which also had a thin red spicy masala coating instead of the sugar dust coating. All these savoury Churros are equally good but this tamarind variant is the best of the lot, according to me!

Mad House Churros!

Next, you can definitely try the Mad House Churros which has a filling of Nutella and is also dipped in Nutella and topped with M & M, it is definitely the most colorful variant of the lot which the kids will adore. The Swiss Affair Churros also has a filling of Nutella and is dipped in Nutella; it is topped with Toblerone and looks extremely yummy and appetizing. Next, I tried the Chocolate Vermicelli Churros – it has a filling of Chocolate Bavarian Sauce and Topped with Chocolate Vermicelli, it is nice keeping in mind the price.

Peanut and loops Churros come in next with a Salted Caramel filling and a dipping of peanut butter; finally, it is topped with fruit loops. The flavor of peanut butter is very typical and this one surprisingly tasted much better than it looked! The Mixed Nut Churros has a filling of Salted Caramel and is dipped in Peanut Butter and topped with loads of crushed mixed nuts.

Mr. Vikram Ghosh, the founder of Bosphorus Churros & Co. promises to open up more outlets in the city pretty soon where there will be more varieties and yes, one Café will also be opened up soon where there will be more food options including Churros, of course! So, Churros is here to take the city of joy by storm, it’ll be the new sensation in the culinary scenario of the city! So from now on, just chew on some churros!!

Cheers!

P.S. Foodiedada was here at this place on PR invitation for review purpose.

  1. Exciting revirew Foodiedada about churros coming to Calcutta! On our last visit to Spain, when we were in Madrid, every morning would start with us going across to a small cafe near the hotel and order strong milky coffee which would come in a glass (similar to our dhaba glasses) and long sticks of churros, dusted lightly with powdered sugar. Heavenly way to start the day! thanks Boshorus Churros. I know you are catering to our Indian tastes, also, but ummmm, I might stop at the hari chutney ones! Lets stick with salted caramel, et al.
