New Menu Launch at ‘Rang De Basanti Dhaba’!

The ‘bhayankar’ dhaba is all set to welcome you with its new menu! That Hindi word literally means dangerous, but don’t be terrified since it’s their unique way to make dining a gleeful experience by making things around you a bit more quirky. As you walk into this classy dhaba that is housed in a mall (and not by the roadside!) you realize you have stepped into a place that has got brains! The colorful desi interiors very well thought and planned out. It has got scattered elements that reflect the typical dhaba life in every nook and corner. The yellow tractor at the entrance, or the flashy ‘bhayankar’ LED board or the Bollywood posters framed on the walls, everything transports you to a typical roadside lively dhaba! Not only that, the icing on the top is given by its signature quirky quotes and pictures on the walls which are guaranteed to get a smile on your face.

This place is located at the 4th floor of Diamond plaza mall which is located close to the Nagerbazar flyover. As already said, the restaurant has got its very signature fun loving looks with a bright and vibrant ambiance, which is sure to attract the mall hoppers and foodies from this part of the city. The place exudes warmth that is derived from the Indian colorful elements all around, even the chandelier is made out of spoons and forks, that’s really amazing! You will find several movie goers dining at this place since you have PVR close to this eating joint in this mall. And needless to say, you have ample parking space available inside the mall, so that’s not something to be concerned about.

Here you will get North Indian fare with their signature Punjabi dhaba style food at reasonable price. Even the cutleries are very typical to this place with stainless steel plates mostly being used. Overall I always loved this place and had dined a couple of times prior to my last visit here. Last time, I was here at this place on an invitation for a food tasting session for their ‘New Menu’ which is going to be launched.

So, coming to the crux of the matter – now let us discuss the items from their special New Menu:

a) Tadke Wali Chanch – This was an amazingly innovative drink to kick off the meal. The Chanch anyway helps in digestion and builds the appetite to some extent. But this is Chanch with a twist; here you will get a sprinkle of spices and the basic ingredients of tadka daal making it taste very different yet enjoyable. This is not like any other mocktails present under the sun, that’s for sure.

b) Phagware Ka Murg – I loved this non-veg starter. This fried chicken was somewhat a desi alternative for KFC and you would love it with some refreshing beverages. The covering was very thin and had the right mix of masalas in there which complements the juicy chicken inside.

c) Moong Dal ki Phillori – Now this was a gem created by the chef, it was an innovative pakoda made primarily of moong dal mixture along with some spices and served in papad bowls to keep the crispiness and the warmth intact. These were served with fresh salad and pudina chutney dip and helped us getting the perfect start for this tasting session.

d) Veg Masala Pulao – This Veg pulao had diced veggies in there and was pretty dry and fragrant, the rice used in there was perfect in quality and you will love it when consumed with some light gravy, maybe with the Railway Mutton Curry from this new menu itself.

e) Roti / Naan – The rotis and naans were served hot and were very soft and nice. I loved the fact that they were not very thick in the middle either.

f) Daal Angara – This dish looked very innocent but somehow it packed a punch and was one of the best dishes I tried that afternoon. The taste had so many layers and was extremely flavorful and rich! It was overall thick and dense and perfect to go with your roti.

g) Paneer Lababdar – This is a popular paneer gravy dish and can be found in several eateries. This is very much a Punjabi dish and the overall texture is very creamy, smooth and definitely delicious with a hint of sweetness in every bite when you consume it with rotis. The paneer cubes were soft and fresh and that’s how I like any paneer dish to be!

h) Railway Mutton Curry – This Mutton curry was the ‘star dish’ for sure. The mutton pieces were extremely soft, tasty and literally falling off the bones. The dish when served had a layer of oil on the top but you should actually take the curry in a small bowl and consume it so that the oil uniformly gets mixed with the dense gravy below. Though the stuff looked very rich but surprisingly it was very light and you won’t even get a feel that you are too stuffed after having it.

i) Methi Chicken – This is anyway something which I really like, here also the taste was impeccable. The aroma of the methi leaves and the right proportion of the ginger, garlic and coriander portions made it absolutely perfect, and yes the yogurt was also whisked nicely and the overall texture was smooth, creamy and very flavorful. Try this with some naan for the ultimate pleasure!

j) Shahi Tukra – That was an amazing dessert. I have tried out Shahi Tukra at several other places previously, but here the dish was served with a little twist that made all the difference. Here the bread had an awesome crunch which you won’t anywhere and that really felt great. It was great to taste, very rich and not overtly sweet, so you can actually consume a lot if you want.

Also there is an option of Green Salad which you can have with your meal for an extra fresh crunch.

The service is unparalleled, very prompt and well informed servers and the warmth and amazing hospitality extended by the GM and the Executive Chef is really unique. Chef Joardar is really a great person and gave us insights of so many dishes from this new menu and more. We loved chatting with him while trying out his amazing dishes.

Overall, I really appreciate this urban dhaba that enables us to savor authentic Punjabi dhaba-style food sitting at the comfort of a mall, maybe after watching your favorite movie. Based on this new menu tasting session, I will rate this place around 4.2 out of 5, which is really awesome and hopefully my next visits will unfold other sides of the gastronomic picture of this place, till then enjoy your meal at RDBD, and yes try out their new menu for sure!

Cheers!
