It has been proven by years of eating that some of the most delicious food emerges from the most humble of eateries. Apanjan is not a fancy designed eatery, in fact it is a small roadside hole in the wall kinda stall which serves the most delicious fried food items in South Kolkata. After all these decades they have now attained an iconic status, which no one can take away from them.
When you are near the stall you will be mesmerized by the aroma of fish fries, cutlets and kabirajis. The place is a bit pricey according to some, but I vouch for every penny you are paying here, it’s worth your money. They serve you fresh bhetki fish unlike all other road side snacks stalls in this part of the city. The place is located near Rashbehari crossing, you need to take the Sadananda road and walk towards Hazra when you will notice a roadside stall on your left opposite Tapan Theatre. You can easily identify the place by (a) the captivating aroma of fish fries in the air, and (b) huge crowd waiting outside the stall on the footpath for their food to arrive, or you can notice many savouring the delicacies right there standing by the busy road.
The menu is written on a yellow board that stands upright outside the counter. And the non-fried stuffs are kept in a glass box in the stall which is extremely cramped-up, to be honest. You check out the menu and order your stuff, which they will then and there fry for you and serve piping hot with mustard sauce and chopped onions, pure bliss!
If you wanna taste your favourite snacks you need to be there in between 4pm to 7pm, you really can’t expect the gems will still be there waiting for you if you are late! Don’t forget to try out their fish fry, fish kabiraji, fish roll, mutton keema cutlet, etc. You can also get hold of endangered Bengali snacks like mughlai parantha and Faul cutlets! So, if you haven’t been there please do pay them a visit. True gems should always be recognized, unlike the ones who make much noise but deliver rubbish.

এবার আপনার বাদামতলা আষারসংঘ অথবা ৬৬ পাল্লির ঠাকুর দেখা হয়ে উঠতে পারে আরো মুখরোচক এবং জিভে জল আনা একটি অভিজ্ঞতা । কি? কথাটা একটু অদ্ভুত শোনাচ্ছে? তাহলে আর রহস্য করে লাভ নেই, অবশ্য যে জায়গাটির কথা বলবো, সেটি অনেকেরই বেশ চেনা। জায়গাটির নাম হলো ‘আপনজন’, রাসবিহারী মোড় থেকে সদানন্দ রোড ধরে হাজরার দিকে হাঁটলে এই ছোট্ট দোকানটি আপনার বাঁ দিকে পড়বে, ঠিক তপন থিয়েটারের উল্টো দিকে।
বহু লোকই এই দোকানটি চিনতে পারেন তার বাইরের ভিড় দেখে। দোকানটি থেকে যেন আজও একটি সেকেলে মিষ্টি গন্ধ ভেসে আসে; এদের না আছে কোন দেখনদারী, না আছে কোন বিজ্ঞাপন – সবাই ‘আপনজন’ কে এক নামে চেনে শুধুমাত্র তার অসামান্য কাটলেট, ওরলি, ফিশ ফ্রাই, চপ এবং কবিরাজীর দৌলতে। দোকানের সামনে কাঁচের বাক্সে সাজানো থাকে ফ্রাই না করা কাটলেট, কবিরাজী ইত্যাদি। আপনি যা খেতে চাইবেন তাই ওরা আপনার সামনেই ভেজে আপনাকে দেবে কাসুন্দি আর পেঁয়াজকুচি দিয়ে।
দোকানের বাইরেই লম্বা মেনু লাগানো দেখতে পাবেন যার সবই বেশ সুস্বাদু, এমনকি সাধারণ ফিশ চপ বা মটন সিঙ্গারা খেয়েও পাবেন দারুণ তৃপ্তি। আপনজনের পরিচিত পদগুলি ছাড়াও আছে অনেক কিছু যা খেয়ে আপনার ভালো লাগতে বাধ্য, যেমন আছে চিকেন দিমসম রোল বা চিকেন ওয়ান্টন। আর হ্যাঁ, এখানে পেয়ে যাবেন লুপ্তপ্রায় মোঘলাই পরোটা বা ফাউল কাটলেট। তবে এটা ঠিক যে এখানে আসলে খেতে ভুলবেন না ফিশ ফ্রাই, ফিশ কবিরাজি, ফিশ রোল, এবং মটন কিমা কাটলেট। ভেটকি মাছের টাটকা, নির্ভেজাল ফিলেট দিয়ে তৈরী হয় এসব উপাদেয় মাছের পদ। পুজোর কটা দিনে এত ভিড় এবং চাহিদা সামলেও এর স্বাদের জুড়ি মেলা ভার। তাই টাটকা ভেটকির হাতছানি পেতে সোজা চলে যান আপনজনে আপনার বন্ধু এবং আপনজনদের নিয়ে!
